Rhode Island is the second New England state with a live proposal to end Medicaid coverage of GLP-1s for weight-loss treatment, reported alongside Massachusetts in April 2026. Why are so many Northeast states cutting this?
The reporting attributes it to state budget pressure and the cost of the drugs rather than to anything about their effectiveness. Gross Medicaid spending on GLP-1s rose from about $1 billion in 2019 to almost $9 billion in 2024.
